RTP Launches "The Cowboy" – A new Portuguese Western

The story of Faustino Cavaco, who committed over 30 robberies and, in 1986, staged one of the bloodiest prison escapes in Portugal, is told in an engaging way, subtly inviting the audience to (re)experience the tense atmosphere in the Algarve on the eve of Portugal's entry into the EEC.

Directed by Ivo M. Ferreira, with a script co-written by him, Bruno Vieira de Almeida, and Hélder Beja, The Cowboy is an action drama based on the book Vida e Mortes de Faustino Cavaco. The series combines real events with fiction, portraying not only the robberies and the prison escape but also the criminal investigation and Faustino's time in prison.

Already considered one of the best national series of 2024, it stands out for its careful yet effective handling of sensitive topics. Without falling into stereotypes, the series captivates the viewer with an exciting plot and complex characters across its 8 episodes.

The cast is one of the series' greatest strengths, with powerful performances by Ivo Canelas, Adriano Luz, Jani Zhao, Carloto Cotta, and João Estima, who shines in the role of Faustino, bringing a magnetic and mysterious aura to the character. Dozens of other actors, including Afonso Pimentel, Vera Moura, Ana Bustorff, Adriano Carvalho, Zeca Medeiros, and Rui Morisson, elevate smaller roles into standout performances.

Ivo M. Ferreira, known for his work on Cartas de Guerra and Sul, masterfully uses temporal and spatial shifts, giving the fiction a dynamic appeal without losing the narrative depth it aims for.

A 100% Portuguese production, The Cowboy has been warmly received by both the public and the press. Its narrative skillfully avoids easy clichés and has been favorably compared to international productions.

Filmed in the Algarve, Santarém, and Lisbon, the series was produced with financial support from ICA, PIC, RTP, and the Lisbon City Hall, with the collaboration of the Loule Film Office and the Municipality of Santarém.
